Bulb Planting on Merstham Rec

Students Join Forces with Borough Council to Beautify Merstham Recreation Ground

In a heartwarming display of community spirit, students from Merstham Park school teamed up today with the borough council to plant bulbs in preparation for Spring at Merstham Recreation Ground. The initiative, aimed at enhancing the natural beauty of the area, also provided an opportunity for young people to engage with their environment and contribute to a greener future.

The project, organised by the borough council, brought together community outreach and anti-bullying students and council representatives, on a crisp morning filled with energy and enthusiasm. Armed with gloves, and bulbs, the participants worked diligently to dig the soil and plant the bulbs that will bloom come spring.

For many students, the activity was a hands-on lesson in teamwork, environmental stewardship, and civic responsibility. The young volunteers not only contributed to the beautification of the park but also learned about the importance of biodiversity and green spaces in urban areas.

Davi said "It was very fun and a chance to get in touch with nature", Bella J said “Its nice to be helping the community and the planet" and Ronnie said "it was fun but very muddy and cold".

The borough council provided the bulbs and guidance for the initiative, emphasising the importance of community engagement in local projects.

Merstham Recreation Ground is a cherished local amenity, offering a space for recreation, relaxation, and community events. The addition of these plants will enhance its appeal, creating a welcoming environment for visitors of all ages. The bulb-planting initiative is part of a broader effort by the borough council to promote sustainability and foster a sense of community pride.

As the students packed up their tools, muddy but smiling, there was a shared sense of accomplishment and anticipation. The newly planted bulbs will lie dormant through the winter. “Projects like these teach valuable lessons about community and the environment. Plus, they’re a lot of fun!” said Mrs Harkness.

With the bulbs in the ground and spirits high, Merstham Rec is poised to become an even more vibrant hub of natural beauty and community activity, thanks to the dedication and collaboration of its young gardeners and local council.

This effort serves as a reminder of the power of collective action and the positive impact that even small projects can have on the environment and community spirit.
