Student Leadership

Student Leadership at Merstham Park School

At Merstham Park School, student leadership is an integral part of school life. We are proud to provide students with opportunities to develop confidence, responsibility, communication skills, and leadership experience while making a positive contribution to our school community.

Prefect Team

Becoming a Prefect at Merstham Park School is an exciting opportunity for students who wish to contribute to the school community, act as role models, and develop valuable leadership skills. Prefects play a vital role in upholding the school's values, particularly our commitment to Inclusion, helping to ensure that Merstham Park remains a supportive, respectful, and inspiring environment for all.

As members of the Student Leadership Team, Prefects are expected to:

  • Represent the school through exemplary behaviour and high standards of uniform.
  • Act as positive role models for younger students.
  • Support and promote the school's values, especially Inclusion.
  • Assist at Parents' Evenings and Open Evenings.
  • Lead tours for prospective students and their families.
  • Promote and support extracurricular clubs and activities.
  • Help with Year 6 transition events and visits to local primary schools.
  • Participate in interview panels when required.
  • Support staff with break and lunchtime duties on a rotational basis.
  • Contribute positively to the wider school community.

Head Students

Students appointed as Prefects are eligible to apply for the prestigious role of Head Student. Head Students act as ambassadors for the school and play a key role in leading student voice initiatives and supporting the wider Student Leadership Team.

Student Council

The Student Council is an important forum that ensures student voices are heard and valued. The council comprises one representative from each Learning Mentor group, with students bringing forward ideas, feedback, and suggestions from their peers.

The Student Council meets every Wednesday during Learning Mentor time, with meetings led by the Head Students. Together, students discuss matters relating to school life, identify areas for improvement, and help shape initiatives that benefit the whole school community.

Leadership Meetings

In addition to Student Council meetings, the Prefect Team meets every Thursday during Learning Mentor time. These meetings provide opportunities to plan events, coordinate leadership activities, discuss upcoming school events, and review ongoing projects that support the school community.

Through the Student Council, Prefect Team, and Head Student roles, Merstham Park School empowers students to take an active role in school improvement, develop lifelong leadership skills, and make a lasting impact on the school community.
