MPS Samba Band
In Music this term, Year 8 have been studying the techniques and traditions surrounding Samba percussion and its role in the carnivals of Rio de Janeiro. Students have been working in whole-class workshops during lessons to learn about the different types of drums and percussion instruments and have worked together as a class to perform ‘Samba Batucada’ - a popular type of samba learned in the Samba Schools of Rio.
Students have learned the complex rhythms required for each part, as well as focussing on collaboration and listening skills to achieve a class performance. The warm weather has also allowed students to take the instruments onto the field to perform, providing a more authentic experience of the benefits and musical challenges of performing outside.
A selection of Year 8 students also performed to an audience of students and their families during our recent Arts Celebration Evening, as well as to executives and headteachers from across the Trust at the recent GLF Leadership Conference, held at MPS. Although slightly nervous, they gave two excellent performances to packed audiences - well done to all the Year 8 students who have taken part!
