Celebrating Effort and Progress
Celebration Evening
On Thursday 24 October, MPS hosted our annual Celebration Evening, which congratulates students who have been awarded Outstanding Effort and Outstanding Progress in every subject, across every year group.
Our guest speaker was Jak Martin, an ex professional cricketer and a national league rugby player who converted to being a PE teacher, then led the department and is now the Head of GLF Foundation. Jak spoke about his incredible recovery following a viral infection on his spine which left him paralysed and unable to walk. He spoke about the resilience and determination he needed to recover from this devastating illness and he had the entire Sports Hall transfixed by his journey of strength and fortitude.
As well as congratulating all the students who won awards, we were treated to some amazing performances: Hannah S (Y10) played the piano beautifully as guests took their seats; our KS3 Drama Club students had us glued to our seats with a stunning performance from Macbeth; and some of the cast of December’s production of Matilda gave us a wonderful preview into what will be an incredible performance - we can’t wait to see the whole spectacle. Thank you to all the students who took part, and to Mrs Green, Mrs Eckersall and Mr Davis who worked so hard to make it all happen.
The evening concluded with 3 very special awards. The Community Award in memory of Faye Stothart, was presented by Faye’s Mum and sister, Gina and Jodie Stothart to Mariya (Y11) who has tirelessly contributed to community outreach initiatives, championed the cause of voiceless young people globally, and stood up courageously, lobbying for a ceasefire in Gaza. Through the ‘Send My Friend’ campaign, she worked to secure education rights for every child, proving herself to be a beacon of hope and change. Mariya is a pillar of our community and a voice for the future, and a very worthy winner of this award.
The Mr Beard ‘Be your Best’ award is presented every year to two students who, throughout their time at MPS, have consistently demonstrated all the values of our school. This year Caitlin S and Frankie M (both last year’s Y11) were our very worthy winners, consistently applying all of our school’s values throughout their 5 years at MPS.
Congratulations to all of our winners. Keep up the great work.
