The Importance of Learning a Language
The Importance of Learning a Language
On Wednesday 28 February we had Steve Eadon come in and talk to years 8 and 9. He talked to us about the importance of languages, and how they are really useful for future careers.
Steve started off talking about how he hated languages at secondary school and didn’t see the point in them. However, due to the GCSE system he had to do a language. He then went on and did further education in languages, and how it helped him receive a job at Arsenal. He was one of thousands of applicants to a year's work experience, and the reason he was able to get in was because he had a degree in German, and Arsenal thought this was an amazing attribute of his.
At the end of his work experience Arsenal offered him a job as a community's coordinator, and he loved the job. He now goes round telling young people about the fantastic opportunities you could have if you do a language course. He also explained that languages are applicable in any profession.
It was a really interesting assembly and has really changed my opinion on languages at school. Thank you very much Steve for doing the talk, and to Mrs Reid for organising it.
